The Toronto Maple Leafs will need cheap reinforcements for the beginning of the 2019-20 season. Will Jeremy Bracco find himself a role in the NHL.It has become fairly black and white to almost all fans that the Toronto Maple Leafs roster beginning next season will likely look markedly different than this past season. Despite a fantastic start to the season the Leafs stumbled as the year progressed. They discovered heels in their game that were inevitably capitalised upon by the Bruins. Those shortcomings, along with forced issues such as salary cap management and impending free agents will leave holes that need to be filled in all positions for the Leafs. As Kyle Dubas made very clear, item number one on his agenda is to resign. Marner’s impending contract will see a very expensive top 6 which frankly won’t allow for the luxury of having 4 thliners earning 2 million per year.
As is being heavily speculated, one or more of Brown, Johnsson and Kapanen could be pulling on a sweater with a symbol other than a Leaf on the front next year. This means there is a need for the Leafs to find cheap depth and not just depth, but players that can contribute both 5v5 and on special teams. Obviously signing such as Korshkov and more so Mikheyev are signings of this nature, however, the Marlies also present a number of players with something to offer. The Clear ChoiceThe clearest option in the minors has to be 22-year-old, Jeremy Bracco. Bracco is a right winger with very good skating and elite playmaking ability at the AHL level (this is one of the few times the word ‘elite’ is used correctly).
Bracco has had an interesting road to where he is today. Committing to BC before being drafted in 2015, he dropped out after just 5 games and headed to the OHL claiming he wanted to focus more on hockey. In his two years in the OHL he remained above a PPG player and finished his final post season run as his team’s top point producer on the way to a Memorial Cup. Following on from that year Bracco went pro and put up a respectable 32 points in 50 games for the Marlies. Regardless of Bracco’s production, the Marlies were just too stacked up front and he became one of the odd men out for their Calder Cup run only appearing in 4 post season matchups. Whilst the 2017-18 Calder Cup run was extremely successful for the Marlies, individually they proved a real mental challenge for Bracco.
Going from being a key piece on teams that won the U17, U18 and U20 WJC as well as the Memorial Cup to a healthy scratch with the Marlies was Bracco’s first taste of true adversity. However, gave Bracco insurances that the following season the Marlies would be his team. Bracco responded to that in the exact manner any successful and driven athlete should, he elevated. The Marlies are currently heading into the ECF of the Calder Cup Playoffs and are undefeated in 7 so far. Bracco lead them in regular season point production and is following that on throughout this playoff run thus far. Where’s the fit? When assessing whether or not a player can make the jump to the NHL one of the most important factors is who he’s replacing.
It’s likely Bracco replaces one of Kapanen, Brown or less likely but still possible, Johnsson. Brown and Kapanen both play on the penalty kill which may be an issue. Whilst Bracco thrives on the man advantage he doesn’t kill penalties. The Leafs do have options on the PK that were rarely used last season in Gauthier, Moore and even Marleau. Any of them can draw in to replace players lost this offseason.
Bracco would likely draw in on the second PP and play the exact role Marner does on the first unit which could allow Babcock to utilise Nylander in more of a shooting role. The second powerplay unit continually saw changes and frequently saw different combinations including Kapanen, Ennis and even Brown. Adding Bracco to that second unit would surely be an improvement over the previously mentioned options. Whilst Bracco is clearly a specialist on the man advantage, if a player can’t compete at 5v5 there will be little to no opportunities gifted to him by Babcock. How does he compare? The question remains as to whether Bracco fits into the Toronto Maple Leafs line up and more importantly, will he at least be able to replace whoever is lost. Look no farther than Bracco’s point production stats.

At Bracco’s age he was able to do something none of Kapanen, Johnsson or Brown were able to accomplish at the AHL level, be a PPG player. Bracco’s 79 points (22-57-79) this season tied the Marlies all-time single season scoring record. Bracco also ticks the special team’s box with his 39 powerplay points which leads the league and his 31 powerplay assists also leading the entire AHL. Furthermore, Bracco led the entire AHL in primary point production by some margin.
Bracco’s vision and his ability to find players with east-west passes in the O-zone would make him an ideal winger for Kadri. This is where RW Jeremy Bracco ended up this season as far as primary points. He’ll be on the next year.— Billius27 (@Billius27)So, can he make it?Bracco can bring a very specific element to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Bracco is a powerplay specialist and a true playmaker who could really benefit a goal scoring centre. Whether or not his playmaking ability will transfer to the NHL level is something many people are more sceptical of. Anyone who has watched Bracco will recall chis ability to break into the zone, open himself up into his signature Mohawk skating stance and deliver his killer east-west passes. Bracco is the kind of player who would thrive in Europe but doesn’t have that acceleration that is so important to make it in the NHL.
Without that it’s difficult to create separation to find passes that make Bracco the player he is.The other gripe on Bracco’s game that’s often mentioned is his two-way play. This is something I personally would challenge and implore you next time you watch Bracco to pay particular attention to his play in his own zone. Bracco uses his edges very well and shows his intelligence in reading play to close space and lanes on defenders. His two-way game has improved out of sight this season.
I personally would consider him to be one of the most defensively responsible Marlies. Finally, whilst there are questions surrounding Bracco’s game. Those questions are exactly the same as the ones he faced moving from junior to pro. He proved all his doubters wrong this season and will look to again at the next level. Bracco has produced at a rate which realistically should force the hands of Dubas and Babcock to at the very least give him a decent look with the big boys at some point in 2019-20.Sources:,Featured Image Credit: Nikos Michals.
